Conan the Barbarian is a fictional character created by the fiction writer Robert E. Howard in 1932. The character first appeared in Weird Tales magazine in a series of stories written by Mr. Howard. Since then the character has been featured numerous times in comics, books, movies, television shows and more recently video games. The character has appeared in comic books steadily since 1970. The two main publishers of Conan comics are Marvel comics and Dark Horse comics. Marvel had Conan the Barbarian from 1970–1993 and Savage Sword of Conan from 1974–1995. Dark Horse had their Conan series in 2003 and is currently publishing compilations of the 1970s Marvel Comics series in trade paperback format.

Conan the Barbarian time and place

The setting is Cimmeria during the Hyborian age. Both the time and place are fictional which helps the story's development because with a fictional setting the writer does not have to be concerned with historical accuracy. The fictional setting allows the writer to have what ever is wanted in the story as long as it is consistant. If the stories were set in a time and place that are real the author would have had to spend a large amount of time on historical research. The character was born on a battlefield and raised by a village blacksmith. By the time he was fifteen he had distinguished himself in combat and was ready to begin his adventures. The writer created the character as being, strong, smart and, heroic. He could speak several languages and understand ancient signs and writings.

Adventures of Conan the Barbarian

As an adventurer he began to wander the land. He roamed throughout the Hyborian age as a vagabond and encountered many Villains. Some of these villains are: Thulsa Doom , leader of the cult of the snake god; Ishiti, enemy of Conan; Kezan Val, enemy of Conan Yara, evil sorcerer. He fights these villains and many others on his adventures. Motivated by his greed and survival skills he often performs heroic feats while fighting villains. Conan’s adventures are what is chronicled in the 21 stories written be Howard. These stories are the basis of the comic books character as well. The character continues to be popular and comic books will continue to use the character as long as the comics sell well. As comics get older they become collectors items. If collected and kept in good shape they should one day be worth a good sum of money which makes them good investments for the fans of Conan the Barbarian.
